Five kinds of job make up most of the calendar. Every one starts the same way: Kurt comes out, looks at the wood or the stone, and tells you straight what it needs.

Deck restoration

Gray, splintered, mildewed boards stripped of the failed finish, washed back to clean wood and stained or sealed. Old, neglected decks are the specialty.

Cedar and Ipé

Softer cedar and dense Ipé both need a lighter hand than pressure treated pine. A 15 to 20 year old cedar deck came back to the color in this photo.

Old school way of restoring wood

Strip it. Wash it. Let it dry. Then seal it.

Strip

A deck that has gone gray is carrying a dead layer: sun-burnt fiber, old flaking stain, mildew in the grain. That layer comes off first, down to wood that can take a finish again.

Wash

Earth friendly detergents deal with the mold and mildew, and the pressure is set for the wood in front of him. Cedar and Ipé do not get treated like pine.

Seal

Stain or sealer goes onto clean, dry boards, so it soaks in rather than sitting on top of dirt.

Usually, yes. Kurt has brought back decks that were 27, 28 and 29 years old and badly neglected. The gray is weathered surface fiber and mold, and it comes off with the old finish. When boards are genuinely past saving but the frame is sound, he can lay new pressure treated decking on the original frame instead of tearing the whole thing out.

All three. Cedar decks 15 to 20 years old and dense hardwoods like Ipé are part of the regular work, alongside pressure treated pine decks and retaining walls.

Earth friendly detergents. Black mold and mildew are treated and rinsed away with them, the same way on decks, walls and brick.
